Indonesia saw it's fair share of war during WWII and the following conflict with the Dutch for independence. Jim recorded some of the aviation left-overs of those times. At some point in Jim's Indonesian travels he ran across some wrecked Douglas A20's. Jim had test flown hundreds of the various versions of the A-20 during the war years. In the images below the #4228 is seen on the tail of one of these planes. Also seen is the white spade insignia of the 389th Bomber Squadron of the 312th Bombardment Group. This outfit operated out of the American facilities at Hollandia, Papua, Dutch East Indies from June until November 1944. The airfield had been liberated from the Japanese by an American amphibious assault code named Operation Reckless on 22 April 1944.

Jim may have wondered if he had tested that plane, perhaps out of Clover or Long Beach, ten years before. His logs indicated that he had not. These images were taken at an aircraft scrapheap during one of Jim's frequent stops on Morotai, an island in the eastern regions of Indonesia.
